Steph Mcfarland

speaker

Steph has been an English teacher for 6 years, with a small stint as an art teacher, and a four year stint as a substitute. She got into teaching because she was obsessed with writing (she has over 45 completed personal journals) and wanted to help students use the written word as a way of personal expression. Her soul was dying a bit in the public school system so she decided to graduate from BYU with a masters of art education. Her thesis explored the emotional state of males and methods that can help males reconnect with their suppressed emotional selves regardless of societal expectations–including art, emotional vocabulary, and writing. So far her plans are to continue her research and education in this realm. Because Steph is a closet hippy with a dry sense of humor, she enjoys things such as kundalini yoga in the foothills, hunting for quality vegetables at farmers markets and then roasting them to sheer perfection, and creating scavenger hunts for her loved ones on special occasions. She also loves riveting nonfiction books about things such as world statistics or economics, outings to plays or the opera, and eating sushi with ginger ale. She was officially diagnosed with ADHD at the onset of 2024, so it comes as no surprise that she is the lead singer in her school’s teacher band, while also taking acting classes on a semi-regular basis. Her two children, a daughter and a son, are quite savvy and enjoy conversations with adults on their good days.

Synopsis:

Society is often not a safe space for male emotion. This has caused a phenomenon called suppression in our young boys that then carries on into adulthood. Emotional expression, especially vulnerability, is the magical center for deep connection. Learn how to reconnect with your own emotional self, create a safe space for others, and enhance relationships through curiosity and expression.

Doug Rutherford

yOUR HOST

Originally from the Seattle area, I now live in Lehi, UT and I have enjoyed organizing events and activities, mostly for singles, for the last 7 years. I have 3 amazing daughters (23, 21, 18).  I have an IT background as a systems administrator but my passion is helping people connect and being an influence in helping them grow in the areas of communications and relationships.  I grill the perfect steak and make a variety of gourmet cupcakes.  I also enjoy karaoke though I don’t claim to be ready for American Idol or anything..

Becky Pierce

Assistant

I grew up in Provo Utah & loved every second of it! I served a mission in the Athens Greece mission. I have lived in Alabama, Arizona, and Washington State. My daughter made me a mom 16 years ago! She was a huge blessing in my life, as I had been waiting for over 10 years to have children.  She is a master at teaching me patience! LOL! I love sports (both playing and watching) especially college football and volleyball. Travel, Photography & Garth Brooks are a few passions I have! Ha, Ha, Ha! I am always up for an adventure and for an opportunity to experience something fun and new. Especially if it involves being outdoors. I owned my own business for 12 years and closed my doors a little over a year ago. I now work as a Sales and Events Coordinator for a Catering company in Salt Lake City. I love the challenge that this job provides me, as with as the competition!!

Seth

Guest speaker

Seth was raised in Southern California (but doesn’t like talking about it), served his mission in Arkansas (but doesn’t like talking about it), and has been divorced for about 12 years (and loves talking about it, so totally ask him about that).  He comes from a family of 6 boys, and 14 nieces and nephews.  He studied Psychology at BYU, worked with abused and neglected kids in state custody, at-risk teens, domestic violence families, rape victims, and on a suicide hotline, so he is super interesting to talk to.  After failing to get a degree as a therapist, he got an MBA and is now a professional MBA player.  That is, he tells people how to make money; he’s a finance nerd.

When he’s not doctoring photos on his dating profile to make him look more handsome and interesting, he enjoys cooking stuff from scratch, canning weird things people don’t usually think of canning, calligraphy, upholstery, woodwork, auto maintenance, gardening, guitar, social dance (but not line dancing 😠), DIY home improvement, and Star Wars.  He is a contributor on personal finance blogs, lecturer on entrepreneurship, Time’s Person of the Year in 2006, makes a mean spreadsheet, undisputed winner of “Participant” trophies, is bad at poetry, semi-professional high fiver, and loves his mom.  If you are hoping to set him up with someone, he is looking for a woman who only wants a man for his money, and who is also really bad at math.
